(iii) Terrorism Thriller

There are two variations on the terrorism thriller plot that I’m going to explore here. The first is where the terrorists plan to commit an attack of some kind and an external protagonist – either alone or as part of a group – seeks to uncover and prevent the plot before it takes place: Black Sunday is an example of this sort of plot. The second centres on an innocent protagonist who becomes caught up in a terrorist conspiracy and seeks a way to escape from them and prevent the act itself: Eric Ambler’s novel The Levanter is an example.

In both sorts of plot, the terrorists are engaged in a mission – they are essentially involved in the bad-guy equivalent of a James Bond plot. The protagonist in both cases, to greater or lesser extent, is an investigator trying to find out the details of this mission – who, when, what, where, how – and then his mission becomes preventing the terrorist mission from succeeding.
